A youth went missing after he fell in the Jhilpar canal in Dhaka's Khilgaon area this morning.

The identity of the youth, aged around 21, could not be known immediately.

The incident occurred when the youth was collecting discarded bottles from the canal around 9:30am. On information, fire fighters along divers were trying to rescue him, said Abdul Mannan, stations officer of Khilgaon Fire Station.

"Locals saw him drowning but we could not rescue him as of 1:30pm," he said

The official said the canal is clogged with waste, hampering their rescue operations.
