Mehdadur Rahman Durand, Deputy Managing Director of Uttara Group who sustained burns in a fire at his Gulshan home a week ago, died at a hospital early today.

He breathed his last around 1:00am while being treated at the intensive care unit of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said its resident surgeon Partha Sanker Paul.

He bore over 50 percent burns on his body, he said.

Sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station Bayezid Bostami said that Mehdadur was alone at home when he sustained burns in a fire at his flat on June 19.

The fire is believed to have been caused due to the air-conditioner malfunctioning, the police officer said, adding that his wife and children are in Japan now. 

The body will be handed to family members without autopsy, he added.
