Explosion at Jamuna shipbreaking yard in Ctg; 3 workers burnt

Three workers sustained burn injuries in an explosion while cutting a pipe of a ship at Jamuna Shipbreakers Yard in Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila today.
Injured Md Pilot (22), Md Samad (40), and Md Jihad (18) were admitted to ward 36 at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said Shilabrata Das, Nayek at the hospital's police box.
All the injured hailed from Boroithola village of Sonaichori union in the upazila, our staff correspondent reports from Chattogram.
The incident happened around 11:45am while the workers were cutting a pipe above the engine room of the ship at Shitolpur, said Mohammad Ali, general secretary of Bangladesh Metal Workers Federation.
There was oil inside the pipe and the blast happened when spark while cutting came in contact with the oil, leaving the three injured, Mohammad Ali added.
Officials of various government bodies are on the way to the spot to assess the damage.
