Narayanganj district unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Mashiur Rahman Rony went missing in the capital on Saturday night.

His family members alleged that plainclothes detectives picked up Rony from Badda area around 10:30pm. However, police denied the allegation.

The JCD leader could not be traced as of 4:00pm yesterday. His younger brother Rana told The Daily Star that he made a call to Rony's cellphone but got no response. He added an unknown caller told him a little later that Rony was detained in Dhaka by Detective Branch of police and would be taken to Fatullah Police Station.

Rony's cellphone has been switched off since then.

Rony, son of Sheikh Mohammad Mostafa Kamal of Pashchim Masdair graveyard area in Fatullah, came to limelight after his recent adverse comment on influential ruling Awami League leader and lawmaker of Narayanganj-4 AKM Shamim Osman.

Rana said they contacted Fatullah police in vain. Later they contacted DB and Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch (North Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told them that they did not detain anyone by this name.

The family was taking preparation to file a general dairy with the police and contacting different police stations in Narayanganj in search of Rony.

The JCD leader has recently been accused in seven to eight “political cases” filed with different police stations in the district, Rana said, adding, Rony might have been detained in connection with those cases.

Earlier on September 9, speaking as a special guest at a political programme in Fatullah, Rony criticised both Shamim Osman and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The next day in a Facebook post he again criticised Shamim Osman and advised him to save himself first and then think of BNP.

Rony's family yesterday held a press conference at Narayanganj Press Club where relatives, friends and political leaders including city BNP Senior Vice-President Advocate Sakhawat Hossain were present.

At the press conference, Rana alleged that they were not allowed to meet the superintendent of police of Narayanganj to submit a complaint and Fatullah police also did not receive a complaint in this regard.

Manzur Kader, officer-in-charge of Fatullah police, said the complaint should be made in the respective police station in Dhaka.
