The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has asked banks to furnish details of all types of accounts and savings instruments of Awami League lawmaker Nazrul Islam Babu, his wife and his business firms to examine their tax compliance.

The business entities owned by Nazrul, a former Chhatra League leader, are Suchana Dyeing and Printing Ltd, M/S Star Trading Co, M/S Babu Enterprise, and M/S Suchana Dying Printing Weaving Industries.

The tax administration’s directive comes at a time when the government is carrying out drives against corruption and illegal casino business.

The NBR and Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit are scrutinising tax and wealth records of a number of top leaders of ruling AL’s associate organisations -- Jubo league, Krishak League and Swechchasebak League.

An NBR official, however, said the inquiry of Nazrul’s accounts had nothing to do with the casino business. 

The directive has been issued to examine his tax compliance, the official added.

Nazrul was elected as a lawmaker from Narayanganj-2 for the third term in the last general election.
