Five people of a village in Brahmanbaria-5 constituency have collected Awami League nomination forms to run for the MP post in the upcoming parliamentary polls.

All of them, hailing from Barail village in Nabinagar upazila of the district, are leaders and activists of the ruling party and its front organisations.

They are Ebadul Karim Bulbul, adviser to the Central Krishak League; Shafiqul Islam, cooperative and self-reliance affairs secretary to the Central Swechchasebak League; Golam Zakaria, member of Brahmanbaria AL; Saifur Rahman Sohel, member of Nabinagar AL; and party activist Mainuddin Ahammed.

Locals said this incident was not unprecedented there as in 2016 eight villagers had collected nomination forms for the post of Solimganj union parishad chairman.

Brahmanbaria AL General Secretary Al-Mamun Sarker said any one in the party could run for the lawmaker post and it was their democratic right.

"Party high-ups will scrutinise their popularity. No opportunists will get a chance here,” he said.
