Awami League candidate Joya Sengupta, wife of late lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta, was declared unofficially elected in the by-election to Sunamganj-2 constituency yesterday.

Joya bagged 95,995 votes while her nearest rival Mahbub Hossain Reju, an independent contestant, polled 40,172 votes.

The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Suranjit who died at a hospital in the capital after a prolonged illness.
