Artiste on the rise
Tête-à-tête with Mehrab

Ashiqur Rahman Mehrab, better known as "Mehrab", has become a familiar face and voice to the music enthusiasts, thanks to ntv's hugely popular talent hunt Closeup 1 -- Tomakei Khujchhey Bangladesh. One of the ten finalists in the show, Mehrab soon attained popularity for his natural singing abilities. A mixed album Adda was released last year, featuring songs by Mehrab and a fellow Closeup 1 finalist, Rumi.

On his journey in Closeup 1, Mehrab says, "My father, Aminur Rahman, has always inspired me to sing. When I registered for the competition I didn't think I could be one of the finalists. However, after getting through the initial rounds, my confidence got a boost. Other contestants, specifically Abid, and I got along really well. Though we were pitted against each other, we became good friends and had a great time."

According to Mehrab, music runs in the family and he grew up in a favourable cultural ambiance. Mehrab's grandfather and aunt were both enlisted radio artistes. Mehrab's passion for music was triggered at the age of eight when he received a guitar as a gift. Subsequently he trained under Basu Dev and singer Pritam.

"My favourite Bangladeshi singers and bands include Mahmudunnabi, Kumar Biswajit, James and Miles. Scorpions, Guns N' Roses, Eagles and Metallica are my favourite international bands."

Mehrab is currently busy with stage performances around the country. The artiste is now working on his first solo album. All songs in the album, titled Siren, have been composed and arranged by Prince Mahmud. The album features a song penned by Mehrab's father. Popular lyricists Asif Iqbal, Kabir Bokul as well as Prince Mahmud have written some of the songs. The album is being produced under the banner of Gaangchil and will be released in a couple of months.

Mehrab, currently an A-level student, aspires to go abroad for higher education in music.
