12 firearms, bombs, ammo seized


The law enforcers yesterday seized firearms and ammunition, including 12 guns, 350 bullets and ten bombs, from Chittagong, Sylhet, Satkhira and Khagrachhari.

Our correspondent from Chittagong reported that police seized three firearms and 350 bullets from a remote hilly area in Fatikchhari upazila at around 1:30am yesterday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Fatikchhari police, led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) MA Jalil, raided a rubber garden at Kanchanagar and recovered one G-3 rifle, one SLR, one 303 rifle, three magazines and 350 bullets. All the arms and ammunition were kept in a sack.

Police said the criminals fled into the deep forest of the hilly area, leaving the sack containing the arms and ammunition.

In Sylhet, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) picked up former organising secretary of Sylhet district Chhatra League Bidhan Kumar Saha in front of his house early yesterday and recovered one AK22 rifle (USA made), one shot gun two barrels of gun and one magazine of AK22 rifle from his possession, according to our staff correspondent.

On Badhan's confessional statement, Rab personnel recovered the arms and ammunition hidden at a place near Bhutto Miah's garage.

Later, the members of the elite force took Bidhan, also former general secretary of Madan Mohan College Students Union, to the house of one of his close associates, Sumon Chowdhury, in the city's Chouhatta area and recovered one shot gun and one .38 bore Indian revolver from there.

Rab sources said Bidhan and Sumon had been involved in arms trading and other criminal activities in the city for long. Kotwali police yesterday produced Bidhan in a magistrate's court that sent him to jail.

Our staff correspondent from Khulna adds: Rab personnel recovered two pipe guns, one single barrel gun, ten bombs, and two cartridges from the house of listed criminal Shawkat Sheikh in Nalta union under Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira district yesterday morning.

Rab sources said the recovered arms and ammunition belong to Nalta Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Wahab. He kept those in the custody of Shawkat.

In another operation, Rab-6 personnel arrested five drug peddlers at Daulatpur in Khulna City on Monday night.

The arrestees are Masud Sheikh, Arif Sheikh, Rabeya Khatoon, Moni Begum and Hafizur Rahman. They were handed over to Daulatpur Police Station yesterday.

In Khagrachhari, the Joint forces arrested a listed criminal and seized four firearms and secret documents from his hideout at Panchhari early yesterday, reports UNB.

The forces raided the hideout in a remote area at around 3:30am and arrested Sunil Kumar Tripura. They recovered one SMG, three light guns and secret documents of a group named Bangladesh-Tripura National Association.

Police said Sunil was wanted in murder, rape and extortion cases. After interrogation, he was handed over to Panchhari Police Station.
