Case filed against Mymensingh doctors for attack on cops

A case was filed on Tuesday night against the students and intern doctors of Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), accusing them of attacking police and obstructing them in performing their duties after a road accident that left two, including a doctor, dead.

Police Inspector Meheruddin filed the case with Sadar Police Station under the Explosive Act against 200-300 students and interns.

Panic gripped the students and the interns as police filed the case without mentioning the names of the accused.

Meanwhile, the students of Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) yesterday boycotted their classes and wore black badges protesting the accident and police attack on them.

The local unit of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) organised a meeting at the MMCH auditorium yesterday, mourning the death of Prof AKM Saidul Islam,

head of the Orthopaedic Department of Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.

Prof Saidul, 50, and his driver Nazrul Islam, 35, died instantly when a bus collided with their private car on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Tuesday.

Soon after the accident, students and doctors of Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) and Community Based Medical College (CBMC) put up barricades on the highway, damaged about 20 vehicles and clashed with police and transport workers.

Police charged baton, fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to bring the situation under control, leaving 40 people, including ten students, wounded.
