Fire burns down 10 houses at Pakistanis' camp

A fire burnt down 10 tin-roofed houses at Murapara stranded Pakistanis' camp in Pallabi in the capital last night, wounding at least 20.

The fire originated from a lamp at 9:10pm and engulfed the camp's about 150 rooms where 150 families lived.

Locals said most of the residents were sleeping when the fire broke out.

"Feeling the heat of fire, I awoke and managed to escape with my three children," Kamrun Nessa told The Daily Star. But she could not save her belongings worth about Tk 50,000, she claimed.

About 20 people were injured when they tried to leave the camp with their belongings and some of them while trying to douse the fire. The stranded people claimed firefighters reached the spot about half an hour later.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence with seven vehicles put out the fire at 10:10pm. However, the firefighters could not estimate the damage immediately.

The residents said electricity authorities snapped their power supply since Friday morning and they are using kerosene lamps, one of which caused the fire.
