Concern over rise in drug abusein B'baria


Speakers at an anti-drug meeting held at Sarkerpara in Brahmanbaria Pourasabha (municipality) yesterday expressed their grave concern over increasing drug abuse and its illegal trade in the district.

The meeting was organised by Brahmanbaria Dhumpan-O-Madak Birodhi Sangathan, a non-smoking and anti-drug committee.

Speakers told the meeting that drug smugglers are using the district as their transit route.

The discussion was presided over by Haji Md Abdur Rahman alias Mongal Mia while advocate Md Tanvir Ahmed Bhuiyan, president of the committee was chief guest.

The meeting was addressed, among others, by Md Samsur Rahman, Md Sadequr Rahman, Md Alimul Haque Rinto, advocate Md Shahjahan, journalist Reaz Uddin Jami, journalist Tufazzal Hussaion, journalist Md Sadequr Rahman Sadek, Alhaj Foyez Ahmed and pourasabha ward commissioner Khondaker Shah Alam.

People of all walks of life were present in the meeting.

Meanwhile, BDR members of 7 Battalion seized 3,184 bottles of Indian Phensidyl from a truck last week. They also arrested two persons.

Another report said a mother of a drug addict son, Suniti Devi handed over her son Doyal to police of Nabinagar Police Station on Thursday.

Mother of another drug addict son at Sarkerpara sought help of the committee for treatment of her son.
