Colony demolished in Noakhali
Our Correspondent, Noakhali
Noakhali district administration yesterday demolished a colony near the circuit house and the residence of the deputy commissioner in the town. Earlier, the colony styled as 'Freedom fighters and journalists colony' was demolished partially on May 10, 2003. Sources said vested quarters illegally encroached some five acres of land in the name of freedom fighters and journalists and built houses during the previous government. The residents of the colony, however, could not show any documents when they were asked by the administration in 2003. The administration then served notice on them to vacate the land shown as site for government and private housing in the master plan of the town. As they did not leave, the administration began to demolish the colony on May 10. The residents then filed a case with the High Court and started living there again. As the High Court rejected the case on May 17, the administration demolished the rest of the structures yesterday.
