Noakhali got off to a flying start in the Sher-e-Bangla Cup 22nd National Football Championship when the defending champions blanked Chuadanga 3-0 in the opening match of the final round in Natore yesterday.Captained by national playma-ker Arman Mia, the experienced Noakhali lineup did not have to wait long to take the lead. Rookie midfielder Shahidul Karim found the mark four minutes into the Group A match at the Adhunik Stadium. Qualifiers Chuadanga, without any big names in their roster, fought back but lack of experience showed in their finishing. They paid for missing a number of chances when Noakhali's veteran centreforward Nakib doubled the lead six minutes before the break. National striker Alfaz Ahmed then sealed the victory in the 50th minute. Before the kick-off both teams observed a minute's silence in memory of Zafar Imam, the Bangladesh Olympic Association secretary general, who died on Thursday. Noakhali, automatic qualifiers for the finals, will take on Dhaka in the last group match on May 26. Dhaka face Chuadanga tomorrow. In today's fixtures, Bangladesh Army will meet Comilla while hosts Natore are pitted against Bhola.
