Police, victims give different versions

©Law enforcers shot a pro-Jamaat sramik leader in Kolaroa upazila and an alleged robber in Shyamnagar upazila in two separate incidents in the early hours of yesterday.

Shamsur Rahman alias Bulbul, 30, secretary of the Jamaat-affiliated Sramik Kalyan Federation, and Qamrul Islam, 40, allegedly the second-in-command of a robber gang, were admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Hospital sources said both of them sustained bullet wounds below their knees.

Shamsur was shot when police fired at him and his aides "in self-defence", said Sheikh Abu Saleh Masud, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kolaroa Police Station.

Police raided the Gopinath area upon receiving news that some people were gathering there to create unrest. Sensing their presence, Shamsur and his aides exploded cocktails and hurled hand-made bombs at them, the OC added.

However, Shamsur told The Daily Star that he was arrested from his house around 12:30am and shot from a close range.

"First I was beaten inside the police station and then taken on a ride, blindfolded, in a vehicle for several minutes after which I was shot in the legs," he said.

Shamsur is accused in eight cases including murder and felling trees on public property.

Qamrul was hit by a stray bullet fired by his gang members during a shootout with police near the Tia canal of Kolagachhi area in the Sundarbans on Friday night, said Aminul Islam, OC of Shyamnagar Police Station.

Qamrul was arrested with the help of locals from his Bagmari village home in Kaliganj upazila on Friday morning and the shootout ensued during a raid based on his confessional statements, he added.

However, Qamrul denied the incidence of a shootout between police and his gang. He said he was shot from a close range after he was taken to the Kolagachhi area.

A gun and six rounds of bullets were recovered from Qamrul, said the OC adding that Qamrul is a member of the robber gang called "Alam Bahini" and accused in several cases including robbery and kidnapping.
