Section 144 in Rangamati after clash

Section 144 in Rangamati after clash

Local administration has imposed the section 144 in Rangamati municipality for an indefinite period following a clash between the activists of Pahari Chhatra Parishad and several organisations of Bangalee settlers.
At least 10 people were injured in the clash at Bonorupa Bazar in the municipality area around 9:30am, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.
The clash took place during a daylong blockade enforced by the ethnic student group in the district protesting inauguration of the activities of a public medical college in the district.
The members of Bangalee organisations along with the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League locked into the clash with Pahari Chhatra Parishad just before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the activities of 11 public medical colleges, including one in Rangamati.
The premier inaugurated the functions of the new public medical colleges through a videoconferencing from her official residence Gono Bhaban in Dhaka.
The ethnic student group backed by PCJSS (Shantu Larma) said they want implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) peace accord before the activities of the medical college start.
Today’s clash ensued when the BCL men and Bangalee settlers resisted the ethnic group activists from picketing during the blockade.
Later, Additional Superintendent of Police CR Pal imposed the section 144 to maintain law and order in the municipality area.
