SC scraps Mir Nasir, son's acquittal

The Supreme Court yesterday scrapped two High Court verdicts that acquitted former state minister Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin and his son Mir Helal Uddin in two separate corruption cases.
The SC also asked the HC to hold further hearing and dispose the appeals filed by Nasiruddin and Helal challenging a lower court order against them.
A lower court in July, 2007 had sentenced Nasiruddin to 13 years' imprisonment and Barrister Helal to three years' in the cases.
The HC in August 2010 scrapped the jail sentences of Nasiruddin and Helal Uddin in the corruption cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.  
The SC yesterday passed the order after hearing two separate leave-to-appeal petitions filed by the ACC challenging the HC verdict.
Mir Nasiruddin was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment for illegally accumulating wealth worth around Tk 28 crore and concealing the information from the ACC, while his son was jailed for three years for aiding his father in protecting their property.
