15 AL leaders resign protesting central decision
From Left: AKM Jahangir Hossain, Golam Moula Roni
Fifteen members of Galachipa upazilz unit of Awami League yesterday submitted their resignation from the party protesting central AL's reported decision to nominate Golam Moula Roni, a member of the party in ward no. 54 in Dhaka city, to contest in the upcoming parliamentary election from Patuakhali-3 constituency (Galachipa-Dasmina).
They sent their resignation letters to the president of district unit by fax and gave copies to local newsmen.
They are Galachipa AL vice-presidents Sontosh Kumar and Golam Gouch Talukder, information and research secretary Salah Uddin, joint secretary Mojibur Rahman, organising secretary Sarder Shah Alam, health affairs secretary Anil Mondal, assistant publicity secretary Samir Poul, assistant office secretary Nasir Uddin, youth affairs secretary Mosharrof Hossain, Galachipa Poura AL Abid Hossain Rubel, and upazila AL members Md. Feroz, Ranjon Banic, Ershad Hossain Badal, Kawsar and Ishaq.
In their letters they said the central AL leadership selected the party candidate avoiding decision of the local body.
The local AL at a meeting on November 8 selected party central leader and former state minister AKM Jahangir Hossain as party candidate. The decision was approved by 344 out of 389 councilors, the letters said. AKM Jahangir Hossain got 320 votes while Golam Moula Roni got only 11 votes.
AKM Jahangir Hossain was elected lawmaker for the constituency in 1991, 1996 and 2001 with AL ticket.
Some party sources said AKM Jahangir Hossain was dropped because of his reformist stance.
