Syed Shamsul Haq receives Mazharul Islam Poetry Award

Considered one of the leading contemporary Bengali poets, Syed Shamsul Haq, received Mazharul Islam Kobita Puroshkar (poetry award) 2011. The award was conferred on Haq on November 27 at Seminar Hall, Bangla Academy.
Bangla Academy confers the award in memory of its first director general, noted poet and folklorist Dr. Mazharul Islam.
Poet Asad Chowdhury was present as a guest at the award giving ceremony. Educationist Zillur Rahman Siddiqui presided over the function. Shamsuzzaman Khan, director general of Bangla Academy, delivered the welcome speech. Nurjahan Mazhar, widow of Mazharul Islam and his sons -- lawmaker Chayan Islam and Shovon Islam -- were also present at the event.
Haq received the award, a crest and a cheque worth Taka one lakh from Zillur Rahman Siddiqui.
Poet Asad Chowdhury said, “Haq's poems highlight our glorious past and our history of struggle. His verses are always refreshing.”
About the award recipient, Zillur Rahman Siddiqui said, “Haq has enriched our literature since the mid 1950s. He has added a new dimension to Bangla poetry. Bangla Academy has made the right decision to honour him with the Mazharul Islam Kobita Puroshkar.”
Haq said, “He [Mazharul Islam] was my teacher. He made a significant contribution to the society as a poet, teacher and devoted organiser. Sir [Islam] would always be remembered for his contribution to the field of folklore research.”
Noted Tagore artiste Lily Islam, daughter-in -law of Mazharul Islam, performed a number of songs at the programme.
Syed Shamsul Haque was born in Kurigram in 1935. He is one of the most profound litterateurs of the country. His poems are unpretentious and draw the readers easily. His style and tone are unique. His poetry zooms in on the Bengali culture, romanticism, patriotism, nature and the Liberation War. He also writes plays, novels, essays and short stories.
The poet has been honoured with Adamjee Literary Award, Shadhinota Padak, Ekushey Padak, Padabali Kobita Award, Nasiruddin Gold Medal, National Poetry Award and more.
