New BGB chief takes charge

Maj Gen Anwar Hussain yesterday joined Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) as its new director general.
He took over the charge from the outgoing BGB chief Maj Gen Md Rafiqul Islam at a ceremony at the Pilkhana headquarters of the border force, said a press release.
The deputy director general, directors and high officials of BGB received the new director general on his arrival at the headquarters.
Rafiqul Islam, who served the force as its chief since May 10 last year, has been posted to the army headquarters. He is going on leave preparatory to retirement (LPR) from July 14, sources said.
Prior to his new assignment, Maj Gen Anwar Hussain was the general officer commanding (GOC) of Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC).
He obtained commission from Artillery Corps of Bangladesh Army on December 23, 1979.
Anwar Hussain also served as commander of 9th Artillery Brigade, commandant of Artillery Centre and School, director at Army Headquarters and GOC of 33 Infantry Division.
He completed Army Staff Course from Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur in 1991, Command and General Staff Course from Staff College Germany in 1992-93 and National Defence Course from National Defence College, Mirpur in 2006.
The new BGB chief also served as an observer of United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG) in 1988-89 and as Chief Military Observer of UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) in 2008-09, the press release added.
