Prof Muhammad Abdul Hai and Begum Anisa Hai Scholarship Fund will be set up at Dhaka University (DU).
Muhammad Ishtiaque Hasan, to set up the fund in memory of his parents, handed over a cheque for Tk 6.50 lakh to DU Treasurer Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman yesterday.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique was present on the occasion.
Out of income of the fund, every year two students who will secure the first and second position in honours final examination from the department of Bangla of DU will be awarded scholarship of an amount of Tk 2,000 per month during their study in MA class.
The DU VC thanked Muhammad Ishtiaque Hasan, Dr Asma Begum, and other members of the family Prof Muhammad Abdul Hai for establishing the scholarship fund at DU.
Prof Muhammad Abdul Hai was born in 1919. He was the first Muslim student who had obtained first class both in honours and master's examinations in Bangla from DU. He had joined Bangla department of the university in 1949.
