The High Court yesterday overturned a lower court judgement convicting former minister Shahjahan Siraj and sentencing him to 13-year imprisonment in a corruption case.
An HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque delivered the verdict after granting an appeal filed by Shahjahan in 2009.
Shahjahan's lawyer Ahsanul Karim said the HC has overturned the trial court's verdict, since the allegations against his client was not proved.
Anti-Corruption Commission would decide whether it would file an appeal with the Supreme Court against the HC verdict, said the ACC lawyer Khusrhid Alam Khan.
ACC Assistant Director Khairul Huda filed the case with Ramna Police Station on September 24, 2007, on charges of concealing information about property worth around Tk 56 lakh.
A special court, set up on the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises, on April 22, 2008, handed down the sentence to Shahjahan on charges of amassing wealth illegally and concealing information on the wealth to the ACC.
