A man was killed in a “gunfight” with police that began after the latter came under “petrol bomb attacks” in Mirpur area of Dhaka early today.
Identity of the victim, aged about 22, could not be known immediately, Jahirul Islam, a sub-inspector of Mirpur Police Station, told The Daily Star.
The SI said activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir hurled petrol and crude bombs targeting a patrol team of police in Purba Manipur area around 3:00am, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
The man came in the line of fire and suffered bullet wounds, the SI said adding that the cohorts managed to flee the scene.
Police rushed the injured to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Four petrol and crude bombs were recovered from the scene.
