Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury who was detained for his alleged involvement in the SAMS Kibria murder case, has been put under suspension.
The decision was made by the Local Government division, Enamul Habib, SCC Chief Executive officer conformed today.
The mayor was put under suspension as he had been in the jail connection with the murder case, the official told our correspondent this evening.
However, no official copy of the order has yet been handed down, our reporter added.
Indicting in the 3rd supplementary charge sheet of Kibria murder case filed on December 21, Arif was sent to jail on surrender before a court in Habiganj on December 30.
On December 21, the court issued arrest warrant against him accepting the 3rd supplementary charge sheet filed by the CID’s senior assistant Superintendent of Police Meherunnesa Parul implicating 11 new faces. The SCC mayor went in hiding since after the filing of second charge sheet on November 13.
The then lawmaker SAMS Kibria, also former finance minister was killed with 4 others including his nephew Shah Manzurul Huda in a grenade attack at Baidderbazar Government Primary School premises in Habiganj as he was coming out after addressing a rally on January 27 of 2005. District AL organising Secretary Abdul Mazid Khan (now lawmaker and district AL General Secretary) filed the case with Habiganj police.
