Orchita Sporshia is a popular face on the small screen. Embarking on her career with Airtel's tele-film, Sporshia has carved a distinctive niche as an actress and model, and has a large fan following among the younger generation.

In a recent conversation with The Daily Star, she talked about her journey and dreams. Excerpts:

How did you venture into acting?

Sporshia: My first television appearance was in 2011 with a TVC of Airtel. One of my friends persuaded me to give a screen test for Airtel and eventually I got selected for the TVC. The same year I played a role in the Airtel-produced tele-film “Arunodoyer Tarun Dol”. Before that I did not have the remotest connection with acting and modelling and I never thought that I would see myself on the small screen.

Tell us about the work you've done so far.

Sporshia: I have acted in a number of television plays and telefilms. My debut work “Arunodoyer Tarun Dol” and another Airtel-produced tele-film “Impossible Five” fetched me popularity as an actress. But I would label BBC's production “Ujan Ganger Naiya” where I played the lead role as my favourite work. I love the character of Anika and it is by far my best work. In addition, I have done many TVCs.

Which are your favourite roles?

Sporshia: I love roles which contrast with my personality. I am from the Old Town and I had no idea about rural lives before my first tele-film which was shot in a village. I came across very different style of living while shooting for the tele-film. There's a scarcity of good scripts and at times artistes have to make compromises for the sake of their profession.

Which actors inspire you?

Sporshia: I don't follow anyone. However, I like the acting of Meher Afroz Shaon, Shatabdi Wadud and Wahida Mallick Jolly. I'm also a diehard fan of Johnny Depp.

Tell us about your aspirations.

Sporshia: I am a dreamer. Becoming a filmmaker is my long-cherished dream which I want to realise in the years to come. In addition, I want to be an on-screen rockstar. During leisure, I paint, write stories, and practice dance moves. I am a bookworm and grew up reading Sunil Gangopadhyay, Samaresh Majumdar and other writers. To me, life itself is a story that varies from person to person and I like stories.

What are you doing now?

Sporshia: Shooting the second series of “Ujan Ganger Naiya”. I am also doing my undergrad from ULAB. I never think of becoming rich or famous; I love acting and will continue to be around in the profession. I am a perfectionist and try to do things to the best of my ability.
