A different call of duty

A woman gave birth to a baby girl under the open sky near Amtoli Mosque beside the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at 4:00pm yesterday.
Acting upon information, Inspector Mahmud Hasan Rubel, in-charge of Nazirabazar Police Outpost, rushed to the spot.
After failing to get an ambulance, police brought the mother and her baby to Mainamoti General Hospital in a police van.
Two locals-- Khorshed Alam Kalu, a member of Durgapur Union Parishad and Swapan, owner of Appolo traders-- took responsibility of bearing the costs of their treatments.
Doctors at the hospital said the duo was in good health.
Rubel said he rushed to the spot with Assistant Sub-Inspector Raju as they considered it their responsibility. They also tried to arrange better treatment for the woman and her baby.
“As the woman [appears to] have a mental health problem, she is not capable of taking care of the baby. A decision will be taken considering the baby's future,” he said.
He added that many childless couples were interested to adopt the baby and the concerned authorities would look into it.
Mosheur Babu, a media activist, said the police's prompt action set a great example of upholding humanity first.
