Biswajit's killers roaming free

A failure of our law enforcement

We are shocked to learn that at least five of the 13 convicts, who were awarded death sentences or life terms in the Biswajit Das murder case, are roaming free, although police records say they are "fugitives".

The Daily Star reported yesterday that some of the convicts are leading largely public lives. Our law enforcement agencies have a proven record of capturing tech-savvy criminals. Therefore, it is unbelievable that the police cannot locate and arrest the killers, who are reportedly organising social gatherings and even are very active on social media. Equally strange is the fact that some of these known faces have managed to escape the country.

The killing of Biswajit in broad daylight shook the nation's collective psyche. The entire nation watched as a helpless young man was hacked repeatedly—by a group of murderers armed with machetes, iron rods and hockey sticks—to death. The killers were prominent members of Jagannath University unit committee of Chhatra League.

As has been pointed out time and again, the killers did not even try to hide their faces while mercilessly hacking Biswajit despite the fact that TV cameras were recording the incident. Did they know that nothing would happen to them? If so, their conviction has been proven right, so far.

We urge the government to end this impunity. If they can get away with brutally killing a person in open daylight just because they had affiliations with the ruling party, it is sure to embolden other criminals.
