The government today urged the television channels to be cautious on the coverage of violence in the country during the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s countrywide agitation.

“We urged channels not to sensationalise facts while covering news of violence,” Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said at a press briefing. “We suggested them to highlight the prevailing normal situation of the country.”

The minister was speaking after holding a meeting with owners and chiefs of television channels of the country at the Information Ministry this afternoon. Four senior ministers attended the meeting that focused on the role of the media under current circumstances.

He briefed the media afterwards.

Minister Amu condemned the violence during the countrywide blockade of the BNP-led 20-party alliance that entered 17th day today. “Their movement is not against the government. What they are doing is terrorism.”

The television channels said to have assured the minister on cautious coverage of violence. They said to have assured the government that they support and belong to fair politics.
