Delhi for lifting hilsa export ban

New Delhi has requested Dhaka to lift the ban on hilsa export to India.
Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Pankaj Saran yesterday made the request during a call on Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque at his secretariat office.
Citing the long-standing friendship between the two
countries, Pankaj said hilsa of Bangladesh is very much popular in India and businesses of both the countries have grown based on the mutual necessity of the people of the countries.
Sayedul Hoque said Bangladesh had stopped hilsa export to India temporarily to meet the domestic demand.
“The government will inform India of its decision to resume hilsa export to India after discussions with the ministry of commerce and high-ups of the government,” the minister added.
Sayedul Hoque said India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will get benefits economically by carrying out research on the long coastal area of the Bay of Bengal.
He also urged India to move forward to expedite the activities of the Bay of Bengal Programme-Inter Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO) and Joint Working Group (JWG).
Secretary of the ministry Selina Afroza was also present during the meeting.
