At least seven activists of BNP-led 19-party alliance were injured when the ruling Awami League men attacked the vehicle of an opposition candidate in Chandanaish upazila of Chittagong this morning.

Abdul Jabbar, the 19-party-backed candidate and also the incumbent upazila chairman, came under the attack when he went to Hasangoni Mohammadia Senior Madrasha centre around 9:30am to visit the voting situation, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting locals.

Jabbar however escaped unhurt.  

The ruling party men swooped on the private car of Jabbar and fired several bullets on them.

Seven people were injured in the attack, witnesses added. Of the hurt, none sustained bullet-wound.

Police fired several round of bullets to disperse the attackers, Nazmul Hasan, additional superintendent of police in Chittagong (south zone) told The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, the authorities shifted Nagarpara Forkania Madrasa polling centre to Poshchim Elahabad Madrasa in the morning without any prior notice.

The authorities also changed the presiding officer of the centre as ruling party men drove him out from the centre last night.

The voting of the centre however started an hour late, from 9:00am instead of 8:00 in the morning.

Only 19 votes were counted till noon.
