Tangled power lines make life risky

Residents of most areas of Galachipa municipality are living under the risk of being electrocuted as the Polli Bidyut Samiti (PBS) has strung an unsafe 33,000 volt power distribution line over the municipality.
The cable is not covered and could break during strong wind, storm, heavy rain or cyclone as it is a disaster prone area.
Md Kaiyum, a resident of Galachipa Sadar Road area, said they were living under risk due to the 33,000 volt power line. "We urged to the authorities concerned to cover the power line, but in vain," he added.
A few years ago, a girl named Falguni Saha was playing on the roof of their house, which has a power line crossing over it, when she touched the power cable and was electrocuted.
Some house owners and traders of Galachipa Sadar Road area submitted a written complaint to the deputy general manager (DGM) of PBS on November 13 this year to take immediate steps over the matter, considering the safety of the town's residents, but no step has been taken as yet.
Mazharul Islam Chowdhury, an area director of PBS, said he will solve the matter very soon after discussing with the officials.
DGM of PBS Sanjib Kumar Mondol said he had informed the higher authorities about the matter, but they can't use covered cable locally.
