A Panchagarh court yesterday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for possessing contraband Phensidyl syrup.

Judge of Special Tribunal-1 and also District and Sessions Judge of Panchagarh Abu Mansur Md Ziaul Haque handed down the verdict in presence of the convict -- Rafiqul Islam, 28, son of Tamij Uddin of Darkhor Nadidanga village in Atwary upazila of Panchagarh.

The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer two years more in jail. 

According to the prosecution, police raided the house of Rafiqul on December 15 in 2012 and recovered 257 bottles of Phensidyl syrup from his possession.
