MP Rana shown arrested

Hearing on remand prayer today

Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana was shown arrested in a case filed for killing two Jubo League activists in 2012.

He was shown arrested after Senior Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Al Masum passed the order in presence of Rana after hearing of a petition submitted by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

Meanwhile, police submitted a prayer to the court seeking five-day remand for Rana for quizzing him in the case for killing Shamim and Mamun.  The court will hold hearing on the remand prayer today.

Ashoke Kumar Sinha, investigation officer (IO) of the murder case, submitted the petition to the court on May 3 for showing Rana arrested in the case.

Mamun's father Abdul Aziz filed a case with a court in Tangail on July 9 in 2013 accusing 13 people including Jubo League activist Atikur Rahman Morshed.

Police recorded the case on September 21 the same year after the investigation, Ashoke said.

Police later arrested seven of the accused including word commissioner Sazzad Hossain Sabuj, he said. The case was later handed over to the DB police, he added.

Later, DB police arrested Khandakar Jahid, Shahadat Hossain and Hiron Miah. The trio confessed the crimes to the court on March 11, March 16 and April 27 respectively.

They told the court that MP Rana and his younger brother Jahidur Rahman Kakon assigned Shamim and Mamun for killing the then district Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal general secretary Ahmedul Haque Shatil and gave three arms and Tk 7 lakh for the purpose, the IO said.

Shamim and Mamun, however, neither killed Shatil nor return two of the three arms and Tk 7 lakh, the IO said.

This made MP Rana and his brother Kakon angry and they later assigned their accomplices to kill Shamim and Mamun, the IO said.

Atikur and his men hacked Shamim and Mamun to death at the directive of Rana and Kakon at his office in Biswas Betka area in the town on July 16, 2012 and threw their bodies into the Jhinai river, the IO added.
