Mathbaria municipality Awami League (AL) office was ransacked by criminals over a political conflict between two groups of the ruling party in the district on Sunday night.

They also attacked an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) during the incident.

The injured is Shakil Babu.

Altaf Hossain Afzal, president of Mathbaria municipality unit AL, said a group of 10 youths equipped with sticks and iron rods swooped on their office and vandalised the furniture.

The attackers also beat BCL activist Babu inside the office.

The attackers are followers of Mathbaria Upazila Parishad Chairman Ashrafur Rahman, former organising secretary of central unit BCL, said Afzal.

Ashraf has political conflict with Mathbaria upazila unit AL President and Mathbaria municipality Mayor Rafiuddin Ahmed Ferdaus.

On Saturday, some BCL leaders of Mathbaria upazila held a press conference at Pirojpur Press Club where they demanded dissolution of recently declared Mathbaria upazila unit BCL committee, claiming that it was formed violating BCL rule.

The president and general secretary of newly formed committee are followers of Ashraf.

After the press conference, Babu shared some news in his Facebook page over the committee. After the incident, the leaders of newly formed BCL committee became angry with Babu, that led to the attack, said Afjal.

Despite repeated calls, this correspondent could not reach Ashraf for his comment  as he did not receive the calls.
