Maitree Express rams car, kills 5 in Gazipur

Five people including four of a family were killed as the Kolkata-bound Maitree Express train rammed a private car in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur this morning.

The incident took place at Shonakhali level crossing when the car was crossing the rail line around 10:15am, our Gazipur correspondent reports quoting Motaleb Mia, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliakoir Police Station.

A compartment of the train was derailed, the OC said.

BSS adds: The deceased were identified as Tahmina Akhter, 38, her son Talha, 12, Laki Akhter, 35, and her daughter Nurjahan, 6, of Goalbatal Village of Kaliakair Upazila and driver Minhazuddin.

Different express trains such as Sirajganj Express, Sundarganj Express, Dhumketu Express and Neel Sagar Express were stuck at different railway stations.

Meanwhile, train communication between Dhaka and the northern parts of the country resumed around 3:30pm after four hours of disruption, said Md Shahidul Islam, station master of Joydebpur Railway Junction.
