A young man hacked his eight-year-old cousin to death and injured the kid's parents following a fight over collecting mangoes at Satian village in Habiganj's Madhabpur upazila early yesterday.

The deceased is Meem, daughter of Lal Kha of the village.

“There was a long-standing dispute between Lal Kha and his cousin Masuk Mia over a land. Several village arbitrations had failed to settle the issue,” Shamsur Rahman, additional superintendent of police (ASP) in Habiganj, said referring to family members and neighbours.

“On Sunday afternoon, Masuk Mia was collecting mangoes from Lal Kha's tree, although the latter repeatedly forbade him to do so. Then Lal Kha's men caught Masuk and beat him. Badly injured Masuk was admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital and later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital," he said. 

As a sequel to the incident, Masuk's son Rashid attacked Lal Kha's house with a billhook around 2:30am yesterday when the latter was sleeping with his daughter and wife.

Hacked by Rashid, Lal Kha's daughter Meem died on the spot and the man and his wife were injured, the ASP said.

Hearing screams, neighbours went to the spot while Rashid fled.

The kid's body was sent to Habiganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
