Grape farming in home yards sees success

Grape cultivation in home yards sees success at Baroibunia village in Matibhanga union of Nazirpur upazila under the district.
People from different areas come to the village to see and learn about the method of grape farming as over a hundred people there are already doing the job.
"Six years ago, I collected a grape vine from India and planted it on my yard. I did it as a hobby, not knowing whether it would give fruit. To my happiness, the plant grew well and started yielding three years ago," said Tawhidul Islam, a youth of Baroibunia village.
"At first the grapes were as sour as olive. But each year they are becoming sweeter and tastier. This year I have got 10 kg of grape.
"Seeing my success, many people of the area are becoming interested to cultivate the fruit. Now I have a plan to cultivate it on commercial basis," he said.
Md Humayun Kabir Munshi of the same village said he took great care after planting a grape vine in his yard three years ago and started getting fruit this year.
"Many people cultivated grape in different areas of Matibhanga union in the upazila as a hobby. We are giving them suggestions about how to take care of the plants and hope that the fruit cultivation will spread," said Nani Gopal Mazumder, sub-assistant agriculture officer in Nazirpur.
