Fenchuganj villagers repair their road themselves

People of Dharan and Gazipur villages in Fenchuganj upazila of Sylhet set up an example by repairing a 400-foot-long road through daylong voluntary service yesterday.

Over 100 inhabitants of the two villages, mostly youths, continued the labour for nearly 11-hours from 6:00am till 5:00pm.

About one and a half month ago, some youths of the areas first sought help from general people and local influential though social media aiming to raise a fund of its estimated cost of Tk 2 lakh.

Since then, they were collecting donations and finally managed to collect the estimated amount and worked together to renovate the road.

The muddy road, linking the two villages, was badly damaged during the flood earlier this year causing immense sufferings to the villagers.

People made repeated appeals to the authorities concerned to repair it, but to no effect, said Anil Das, a resident of Gazipur village.

They were hopeful about the repair work after local UP chairman visited their area months ago, Anil added.

Contacted, Ashraf Babul, acting chairman of Gilachhara union, said he tried to get the road repaired, but didn't get any allocation from the authorities concerned.

Moudud Ahmed Adil, one of those who took the initiative though social media first, said as they could not wait for long for allocation of fund, they have started repairing the road on self-help basis.
