Fellow students protest death

Students of a women's college in the district formed a human chain yesterday protesting death of their fellow student allegedly due to wrong treatment.

Several hundred teachers and students of Sakhipur Residential Women's Honours College in the district, as well as relatives of the deceased student, formed the human chain on Sakhipur-Mohanandapur road in front of the institution.

The deceased was Ishrat Jahan Happy, a meritorious student of the college and daughter of Abdul Hannan, a shopkeeper and resident of ward No 6 in Sakhipur municipal area.

Speakers at the human chain alleged that Happy died due to wrong treatment. They blamed a doctor of a local private clinic for it and demanded his punishment.

Principal Renubor Rahman and college students' union Vice-President Swapna Akter, among others, spoke at the programme.

Happy's relatives said they admitted her to Life Care Clinic and Nursing Home in Sakhipur municipal area on March 5 as she had a stomach ache.

Dr Abdus Sattar, one of the owners of the clinic, diagnosed the problem as appendicitis and operated on her the next day, they said.

However, Happy's condition deteriorated and she was referred to Tangail General Hospital.

As her condition did not improve, she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on March 16, where she died on Monday, they added.

Dr Sattar said Happy's relatives took her to a clinic in the town where it was diagnosed that she had appendicitis, so he performed an appendicitis operation. The patient might have had some other problem for which she died, he added.
