A man allegedly slit the throat of his five-year-old physically challenged son and attempted to kill himself in Phulbaria upazila on Friday.

The victim was Mohammad Riad, son of Habibur Rahman of Baruka village.

Police said Habibur, 35, son of Joynal Abedin, married for the second time one year ago while he was working in Jamalpur.

His first wife divorced him three months ago and started staying at her parents' house, keeping the boy with his father, police said.

Habibur took the boy to Batta Taltola on Friday where he slit the boy's throat with a knife, police said, adding that he also tried to cut his own throat.

Locals found the boy dead and Habibur in a critical state and informed police.

Habibur is now under treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, police said.
