The condition of twenty-year-old mentally ill Fatema Khatun, who was kept chained by her parents for nearly three years, is improving gradually under the supervision of the doctors at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).

After being admitted at the medicine ward of the hospital on Monday she was shifted to psychiatry ward the following day.

Deputy Director Dr Abdul Gani said Fatema has been suffering from a mental disorder called schizophrenia and it will take time for her full recovery.

Dr Monju Moshwan, assistant registrar of the psychiatry ward, said the girl is taking food normally and could also take her medicines on her own.

“Improvement of her condition in the last five days is reasonable and if it continues like that she will return to her home soon” Dr Monju said.

Fatema's mother Achhia Khatun said her daughter is taking food normally and sleeping more than before.
