An organised gang beat up a contractor of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) in Trimohini area under Kurigram Sadar upazila on Sunday night allegedly for refusing to give illegal toll.

The victim, Badsha Alamgir, 55, a resident of Jummapara area in Lalmonirhat town, is undergoing treatment at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.

An extortionist syndicate demanded Tk one lakh toll from him about a week ago, injured Badsha said, adding that on refusal they beat him mercilessly when he went to Trimohini area on Sunday night.

At a press conference at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital on Monday night, BREB Contractors' Association President Abdur Razzak Reza said the same gang physically harassed another contractor Towfiqur Rahman over the same issue and on the same spot on Saturday night.

“We have submitted a written complaint to the BREB executive engineer, demanding legal action against the culprits and steps to save contractors from such harassments,” he said.

BREB Executive Engineer (Kurigram-Lalmonirhat Zone) Maminul Islam said although the incident took place outside BREB office, he will forward the written complaint to the authorities concerned for their direction.
