'Brucellosis a major health problem for people and animals'

Brucellosis is a 'multiple burdens' disease with economic impacts involving human, livestock and wildlife, said a group of scientists of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).

They said this at a seminar titled “Livestock and Human Brucellosis: Molecular diagnosis, treatment and control” held on BAU campus yesterday.

The disease can have considerable impact on socio-economic development and continue to be a major public and animal health problem in many regions of the world, especially in countries where rural economy relies largely on livestock breeding and dairy products, said the scientists.

The project is funded by Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF).

The scientists also said Brucellosis mainly affects reproduction and fertility, with abortion and reduced milk yield in animals.

As this disease is hazardous for both for human and animal, some measures should be taken to control and eradicate it, they said.

Principal investigator of the project Dr Md Siddiqur Rahman presented the keynote paper at the seminar.

BAU Pro-vice chancellor Prof Dr Jasimuddin Khan was the chief guest.

Dr Priya Mohan Das, Dr Md Kazi Kamaruddin, and Mymensingh District Livestock Officer Dr Md Aftab Ahmed were  special guests.
