BNF for scrapping EC secretariat

Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) today placed a five-point proposal including scrapping of the Election Commission Secretariat during its talks with President Abdul Hamid.
BNF chief Abul Kalam Azad said this while briefing media at Bangabhaban entrance after holding the talks on formation of new Election Commission this afternoon.
"Election Commission is a corporate body. It is enough to carry out their activities. There is no need for a separate secretariat," Azad said defending the party's proposal.
An 18-member delegation led by Azad, the lone lawmaker from the party, went to Bangabhaban around 2:30pm as a part of the president-initiated on-going dialogue with political parties on reformation of the commission.
The party also opposed enactment of a law in line with the constitution for formation of the commission, he said.
Other proposals include the inclusion of a former IGP in the five-member EC, and not sending incumbent EC members to retirement at the same time.
Meanwhile, all the political parties, who joined talks with the president earlier, so far recommended for enactment of a law in line with the constitution on forming the EC and for having a separate secretariat for the EC.
