A court here yesterday sentenced four people to different terms of imprisonment for throwing acid on a college girl at Gopalpur village in Sadar upazila in 2014.

The convicted are the main accused Rajib Ali, 22, son of Masud Ali, Ratan Ali, 20, son of Asharful Ali, Al Amin, 23, son of Ramjan Ali and Johurul Islam, 27, son of Amjad Mollah, all of the village.

Rajib was sentenced to imprisonment for 14 years, while the other three were awarded seven years each.

The court also fined Rajib Tk 50, 000, and the other three Tk 10, 000 each.

District and Session's Judge Arup Kumar Goswami delivered the verdict in presence of the accused.

According to the prosecution, Rajib and his three cohorts threw acid on Sonia Khatun, daughter of Ayub Mondol of the village, through a window while she was sleeping with her younger brother Titumir on the night of July 5 in 2014. Rajib had got angry as Sonia turned down his love proposal. The girl was an intermediate first year student at Kushtia Adarsha College at  that time.
