Police yesterday arrested a youth hours after he "raped" a 13-year-old girl in Barisal Sadar upazila.

During primary interrogation, Shamim, 25, a day labourer, admitted to the crime, said Kotwali police. Shamim forcibly took her into a nearby forest and raped her there. Later, the girl let her mother know the matter, said police, quoting her family.

Afterwards, the villagers caught Shamim and handed him over to police.

The girl was sent to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for medical test.
