A court in Bagerhat yesterday sentenced a woman and accomplice to death for killing her husband in Bagerhat in 2015.

The convicts are Fatema Begum, 46, of South Kumariajola village in Morrelganj upazila, and Shahjahan Sheikh, 60, son of Miraj Uddin Sheikh of the same village.

Judge Md Zakaria Hossain of Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court-2 passed the order. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each.

On the charge of hiding the body after killing, the court also awarded them seven years of jail term and fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve six more months in jail.

The court, however, released another person named Saiful Sheikh as the charges against him were not proved.

On March 16, 2015, Fatima along with Shahjahan strangled her husband Al Amin in their house and buried the body under the kitchen, said Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Sita Rani Debnath.

Later, Al Amin's son Mohammad Ali filed a general diary with Morrelgonj Police Station.

By tracking the mobile phone, police suspected Fatema's involvement in the killing and arrested her.

Following her confessional statement, police recovered the dead body on June 17 the same year. The next day, Al Amin's brother-in-law Mohammad Mubarak Akon filed a murder case with police station mentioning the names of three people.

On June 10, 2016, CID Inspector Mohammad Saiful Islam submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing the three, added the APP.

The court finally gave death sentence to two, releasing the other.
