Police recovered the bodies of two newborn babies from separate dustbins in Mymensingh city yesterday.

Locals found the bodies in the trash cans in Bhatikeshor and Baghmara areas and informed the law enforcers.

The bodies were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) for autopsy, said Sub-inspector Mahbub-or-Rashid of Kotwali Police Station.

One of them was male, while the other's gender could not be known as the lower part was severed by street dogs, said the SI.

There are many unauthorised clinics in the city and the newborn death might be “an illegal act” of one of them, said Khandaker Shaker Ahmed, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kotwali Police Station.

“We are investigating into the matter to find who are involved with it,” said the OC.

Locals alleged many unauthorised clinics in Mymensingh are conducting “illegal acts” as there is no proper monitoring.

Contacted, Dr AKM Abdur Rouf, civil surgeon of Mymensingh, said there are 126 licensed clinics and 88 diagnostic centres in Mymensingh.

“We have already served notices to unauthorised clinics to take licenses on several occasions but many did not respond,” he said.

A probe committee will be formed to investigate the newborn death and the culprits would be brought to book, he said.
