Teenager dies in Mirpur building collapse

A teenage girl was killed and a minor boy injured as an abandoned building collapsed on their tin-shed house in Mirpur of Dhaka early today.

Deceased Kulsum Akter Nishi, 16, is daughter of Harun-ur Rashid of Sherpur district while injured Raihan, 9, is her nephew.

Nishi used to live in the house in Shah Ali area with her elder brother Ismail and Raihan.

Around 3:00am, a portion of the abandoned building, which was a shelter for vagabonds, collapsed on the tin-shed house around 3:00am, said Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station said.

Immediately after the incident, Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel rushed to the spot and rescued Nishi and Raihan.

Kulsum was pronounced dead after she was whisked off to a local hospital, the OC added.

Raihan was undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Two families including one of Kulsum used to live at two makeshift houses near the abandoned building and they were given warnings several times but they did not move, said Anwar, quoting the shelter authorities.

The shelter however was shifted from the abandoned building following its dilapidated condition.
