Sammilito Samajik Andolon, a civic platform, yesterday demanded that the authorities concerned take strict measures to stop killing and abduction in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) and other parts of the country.

It also demanded that the government ensure peace and stability in the upcoming national parliamentary election slated for later this year.

The demands were made at a human chain organised by the platform in the capital’s Shahbagh area.

The recent killing incidents in the CHT indicate deterioration of law and order, said Sammilito Samajik Andolon activist Prof Azizur Rahman.

Citing different violence incidents across the country, he said, “Such incidents remind us of the gruesome picture of polls-related violence in the past.”

Along with strict initiatives from the administration, civil society representatives, cultural and rights activists should unite to resist the incidents, he said, while reading a concept paper at the programme.

Sammilito Samajik Andolon President Ziauddin Tariq Ali and its General Secretary Saleh Ahmed also spoke, among others.
